
Camu camu is a small, sour Amazonian fruit with a genuinely extraordinary vitamin C content. Published figures for the fresh pulp run from roughly 800 to 6,100 mg per 100 grams, against about 53 mg in a raw orange. That part is real. Almost everything else attached to camu camu in supplement marketing is either overstated or contradicted outright by human trials — including the popular claim that its vitamin C is absorbed better than the ascorbic acid in a tablet. The more defensible story is the polyphenols that travel with it, and a 2024 trial that had very little to do with vitamin C at all.
What camu camu actually is
Camu camu is Myrciaria dubia, a myrtle-family shrub native to the seasonally flooded river margins of the western Amazon, principally Peru and Brazil. The fruit is a cherry-sized berry, red to purple when ripe, and far too acidic to eat by the handful.
So almost nobody outside the region eats it fresh. It arrives elsewhere as frozen pulp, juice, or — most often — a freeze-dried or spray-dried powder. A 2026 population-genetics survey of wild Peruvian stands describes a species still largely gathered from the wild rather than farmed, which matters later.
How much vitamin C is really in it
Any article that gives you one confident milligram figure is hiding the range. Researchers analyzing pulp grown in Paraná, Brazil reported 1,490 mg/100 g unripe, 1,400 half-ripe and 1,380 ripe, while noting that Amazon-region fruit had been reported at 2,400–3,000 mg/100 g. A 2023 compositional study measured 2,840 mg/100 g in ripe fruit and about 20.3 g/100 g in the freeze-dried material.
Ripeness, provenance, river basin and post-harvest handling all move the figure, and vitamin C degrades in storage: the Paraná group found frozen pulp at −18 °C lost 23% of its vitamin C in 28 days. Drying method shifts a powder’s concentration again. The only defensible basis for a label number is a batch certificate of analysis, not a figure lifted from a paper.
It is also not the highest-vitamin-C food on earth. Against the USDA figures, camu camu is dramatically above citrus and comparable to acerola — not categorically above it.

Fresh-food values come from the USDA vitamin C content tables. The powder figure is not a like-for-like comparison — freeze-drying removes the water, so a gram of powder stands in for several grams of fruit.
The absorption claim does not hold up
The most repeated line about camu camu is that whole-food vitamin C is better absorbed than synthetic ascorbic acid. The direct human comparisons say otherwise. In a 2013 randomized crossover pharmacokinetic trial, nine non-smoking men aged 18–35 took 200 mg of vitamin C as a chewable tablet or the same dose from gold kiwifruit, with a three-week washout. There was no significant difference in the plasma time-concentration curves (P = 0.645).
A systematic review by the same group, covering six steady-state and twelve pharmacokinetic human studies, concluded that all steady-state comparative bioavailability studies in humans have shown no difference between synthetic and natural vitamin C. A few pharmacokinetic studies showed transient differences the authors judged to be of minimal physiological impact. The review also tested the food-matrix argument directly, and found that other kiwifruit phytochemicals were neither enhancing nor inhibiting vitamin C uptake in humans.
Those same authors still recommend food sources — for a different reason. Not superior uptake of the vitamin, but the polyphenols, carotenoids and fiber that come with it and that an ascorbate tablet does not contain. We have written about whole-food versus synthetic nutrient forms at more length.
What human trials of camu camu found
The human literature is small, short and mostly biomarker-based. In a 2008 study in the Journal of Cardiology, 20 male smokers averaging 22 cigarettes a day took either 70 mL/day of camu camu juice supplying 1,050 mg of vitamin C or a 1,050 mg vitamin C tablet for seven days. The juice arm showed reductions in urinary 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine, total reactive oxygen species, hs-CRP, IL-6 and IL-8; the equivalent-dose tablet arm did not.
The more substantial trial is a 2024 randomized crossover study in Cell Reports Medicine, led by André Marette at Université Laval. Thirty overweight, hypertriglyceridemic participants took a camu camu extract or placebo for 12 weeks, with liver fat measured by MRI. Liver lipids fell 7.43% during the extract period and rose 8.42% during placebo, a net difference of 15.85%. The investigators attributed the effect to polyphenols metabolized by gut bacteria, not to vitamin C.
A 2021 review adds two smaller studies: 18 participants taking camu camu capsules delivering 320 mg of vitamin C showed raised serum ascorbate along with lower blood glucose, LDL and total cholesterol, and 20 healthy adults given a single dose of pericarp extract showed changes in flow-mediated vasodilation.
Where that evidence stops
The 2008 smoker study is the one camu camu marketing leans on hardest, and it cannot carry the weight. Roughly ten people per arm, seven days, smokers only, surrogate biomarkers, no placebo, one site. It is a hypothesis generator. It is also frequently misread as proof that food-form vitamin C is better absorbed, which is not what it measured and not what the bioavailability trials found.
The 2024 liver-fat trial is better designed but still 30 people, one center, one specific extract, a surrogate endpoint, one unreplicated result. An extract standardized for polyphenols is not the same material as a scoop of culinary powder, and the dose used there is not what a blended greens formula delivers. Interesting, worth following, not settled.
Vitamin C fundamentals worth getting right
Most practical questions about camu camu are really questions about vitamin C, and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements answers them cleanly. The RDA is 90 mg/day for adult men and 75 mg/day for adult women. Smokers need an additional 35 mg/day. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 2,000 mg/day.
Absorption follows saturation kinetics, which is the part megadose marketing skips. Around 70–90% of a 30–180 mg daily intake is absorbed, but absorption falls below 50% above 1 g/day. Cells saturate near 100 mg/day, and above 200 mg/day plasma concentrations rise only marginally — a 1.25 g dose peaks near 135 µmol/L, roughly double what 200–300 mg from food achieves. On colds, the evidence is specific and often misquoted. The 2013 Cochrane review pooled 29 trials and 11,306 participants and found that regular supplementation did not reduce cold incidence in the general population (RR 0.97). In five trials of 598 marathon runners, skiers and soldiers under extreme physical stress, incidence was roughly halved (RR 0.48). Duration was shorter by 8% in adults (95% CI 3–12%) and 14% in children (7–21%), and doses started after symptoms began showed no consistent effect across 3,249 episodes.
Wild harvest, and why sourcing is the real question
Most commercial camu camu is still gathered from wild floodplain stands rather than cultivated. The 2026 genetics study sampled 254 individuals across seven wild Peruvian populations and found a heterozygote deficit (expected heterozygosity 0.220–0.531 against observed 0.149–0.483) and three distinct river-basin genetic units. The authors note that intense wild harvesting is potentially reducing effective population sizes, and that overharvesting and habitat degradation are associated with local declines.
That makes “sustainably wild-harvested” a phrase worth interrogating rather than trusting. Community-based supply arrangements linking harvesters directly to buyers are the main proposed route to keeping wild harvest viable. A brand that can name its region, its cooperative and its chain of custody is telling you something. A brand that can only offer the adjective is not.
What to look for if you buy it
Ask for a certificate of analysis with a batch-specific vitamin C figure. Given how far the published range spreads, a label number not tied to testing on that lot is a guess. Ask about drying method too, since heat costs vitamin C.
Then check the amount. Camu camu in a multi-ingredient greens blend is usually present in fractions of a gram, nowhere near the doses used in the trials above, and a proprietary blend will not tell you enough to judge. Common questions
Is camu camu better than a vitamin C tablet?
Not for vitamin C absorption. The randomized crossover comparisons in humans found no meaningful difference in plasma vitamin C between food-derived and synthetic sources. The argument for the fruit is the polyphenols and other compounds that come with it, which is a different claim and a more thinly evidenced one.
How much camu camu powder should I take?
There is no established dose, because no trial has set one for the culinary powder. Most products suggest half a teaspoon to a teaspoon. Adult vitamin C requirements are 75–90 mg/day and the upper limit is 2,000 mg/day, so a heaping scoop of a concentrated powder can sit closer to that ceiling than you might expect.
Does camu camu prevent colds?
No vitamin C source has been shown to. The 2013 Cochrane review found no reduction in cold incidence in the general population across 29 trials. It did find modestly shorter cold duration with regular supplementation, and a large reduction in incidence in one narrow group: people under extreme short-term physical stress. Is camu camu higher in vitamin C than acerola?
They are broadly comparable. Acerola is about 1,677 mg per 100 g in USDA data; camu camu pulp spans roughly 800–6,100 mg per 100 g depending on ripeness, origin and handling. Both are far higher than citrus, and claims that camu camu is the single highest vitamin C food are not cleanly supportable.
Camu camu is a naturally rich source of vitamin C, and that is worth something on its own terms. It is not better absorbed than ascorbic acid, it is not uniquely the highest, and the research worth watching is the polyphenol work. Buy it for what it verifiably is, from a supplier who will show you the batch testing.
