
Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater green alga, and what separates a worthwhile one from a useless one comes down to whether the cell wall has been broken. Intact, the cell is close to indigestible, and there is human data showing how badly. Broken, it behaves like other whole-food green powders. The second thing worth knowing is that the detox story attached to chlorella is not supported by a single human trial. What follows covers the wall, the evidence, the vitamin B12 question, the vitamin K problem for anyone on warfarin, and the gap between trial doses and what a scoop of a blend delivers.
What chlorella is
Two names show up on labels: Chlorella vulgaris and C. pyrenoidosa. Much of the material sold as pyrenoidosa is taxonomically closer to C. sorokiniana — an early signal about how loosely this category labels itself.
Reported dry-weight composition runs to roughly 59% protein, 17% carbohydrate — more than 65% of it cell-wall fiber — and 11% fat, mostly polyunsaturated, with lutein the dominant carotenoid. A 10 g serving gives about 5.9 g protein, 1.7 g carbohydrate and 1.1 g fat. Micronutrient figures are shakier: folate and iron are reported high, but those numbers are strain- and pond-dependent rather than label-grade constants, as the B12 data below makes clear.
The cell wall is the most important thing on the label
Chlorella’s wall is usually called cellulosic. Direct analysis of C. vulgaris walls found something more complicated: 20–25% neutral sugars, 15–20% uronic acids, 7–17% glucosamine and 6–10% protein. “Rigid cellulose shell” is a simplification, but the practical point survives it: the wall is tough, and human digestive enzymes do not get through it.
A 2024 randomized crossover trial in 10 healthy adults matched 20 g protein doses across four sources and tracked plasma amino acids for five hours. The incremental area under the curve was 86.6 mmol/L for milk, 84.9 for spirulina, 55.7 for split-cell chlorella and −4.1 for whole-cell chlorella. Intact-wall chlorella produced no net rise in circulating amino acids at all.
Two caveats, because the number is dramatic. There were 10 participants, and the split-versus-whole comparison came in at p = 0.09, short of the usual significance threshold. A rat study using microfluidization pointed the same way more modestly, raising true protein digestibility from 64.7% to 70.6%. Small sample, consistent direction, very large effect.
Disruption is mechanical, not chemical. Bead milling is the low-heat industrial default; high-pressure homogenization is faster but generates heat that can re-aggregate released material; ultrasonication works and is slow.
What the human trials found
The best-evidenced area is cardiometabolic markers. A 2018 meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials covering 797 subjects reported chlorella supplementation associated with total cholesterol 9.09 mg/dL lower (95% CI −12.91 to −5.26), LDL-C 8.32 mg/dL lower, systolic blood pressure 4.51 mmHg lower and fasting glucose 4.23 mg/dL lower. Diastolic pressure moved 1.64 mmHg and only just cleared significance at p = 0.049. Triglycerides, HDL and BMI did not move. Effects required more than 4 g/day for at least eight weeks and concentrated in participants whose readings were already elevated. The constituent trials were small, several manufacturer-supported.
On immune markers, a 2011 randomized crossover in 15 men taking 6 g/day for four weeks found salivary secretory IgA secretion rate rose about 37% against placebo; it was funded by a chlorella manufacturer. A larger follow-up in 26 athletes at 6 g/day for six weeks again raised resting sIgA, and found upper respiratory infection incidence identical at 31% in both arms. The marker moved. The outcome did not. That distinction is the whole game, and most chlorella marketing drops the second half of it.
Elsewhere the work is thin. A double-blind trial in 27 healthy men at 6 g/day for four weeks reported higher antioxidant capacity and improved fatigue at rest, and a crossover in 20 people with no external funding found submaximal lactate fell from 3.05 to 2.67 mmol/L with no change in VO2max. Mechanistically interesting. Not a performance claim.
The detox claim, and why we retired it
Chlorella is sold everywhere as a detoxifier that pulls heavy metals out of the body. There are no human trials showing that. None.
What exists is three separate things that get blended together. Chlorella is an efficient metal biosorbent in water, which is real, is why it is studied for wastewater treatment, and says nothing about what happens inside a person. There is one mouse study on tissue methylmercury elimination, in a different organism. And there are two small Japanese studies in pregnant women at 6 g/day, reporting lower breast-milk dioxin and lower blood dioxins.
Even that dioxin result has a mundane explanation: fiber interrupting the recirculation of dioxins being eaten, in the gut, on the way through. That is not systemic chelation, and not the same as shifting something already stored in tissue. Twenty women is also not a body of evidence.
So we do not make the claim, and a brand that does has told you something about its standards. “Detox” also carries a specific FTC enforcement history.
The B12 question chlorella can partly answer
This is the one place chlorella genuinely differs from spirulina. Spirulina’s predominant cobamide is inactive pseudovitamin B12, which does not do the job in humans. Chlorella contains real B12.
The catch is consistency. An analysis of 19 chlorella products found B12 ranging from under 0.1 µg to about 415 µg per 100 g dry weight — a more than 4,000-fold spread — with cobalt-free corrinoids in several. The authors concluded the B12 comes from bacteria co-growing in open culture or from medium ingredients, not from the alga itself. It is an accident of the pond, not a property of the species.
Clinically, 17 vegans and vegetarians with suspected deficiency took 9 g/day for 60 days and serum methylmalonic acid fell about 34%. Seventeen people, single-arm, manufacturer-linked. The honest line: chlorella can supply active B12, but the amount is a property of the lot, not of chlorella. Anyone moving to a plant-based diet is better served treating a tested B12 supplement as the plan.
Vitamin K1, warfarin, and who else should be careful
The sharpest interaction chlorella has is one almost nobody mentions. A Japanese analysis measured roughly 20,620 µg of vitamin K1 per 100 g of chlorella product, and found 9 g raised plasma K1 from 0.48 to 1.07 ng/mL within four hours. The adequate intake for vitamin K is 90–120 µg/day, so a few grams can exceed that many times over. LactMed notes that chlorella’s high vitamin K content may reduce warfarin effectiveness — with those numbers, concrete rather than theoretical. Anyone on warfarin or another vitamin-K-antagonist anticoagulant should speak to the clinician managing their INR first.
Other groups worth flagging. People with autoimmune conditions or on immunosuppressants, given that chlorella measurably raises immune markers. People with asthma or an algae or mold allergy: reactions including asthma and anaphylaxis are documented, alongside an occupational asthma case. And anyone photosensitive or taking photosensitizing drugs: chlorella-induced phytophotodermatitis, attributed to pheophorbide a, is described in the dermatology literature. Nausea, cramping and diarrhea are the ordinary complaints.
The gap between a trial dose and a scoop
Published trials span 1.2–10 g/day. The cardiometabolic signal needed more than 4 g/day for at least eight weeks, and most immune and oxidative-stress work used 6 g/day.
A typical blended greens scoop is 8–12 g total across 20 to 50 ingredients, often inside an undisclosed proprietary blend. Chlorella’s share is commonly between a fraction of a gram and 2 g — below the studied range, usually well below it. No blended greens powder, ours included, should be sold as matching those intakes. Trial-level intake means standalone chlorella, weighed, taken daily for months; a blend is a broad nutritional base, a different job. What to look for on a label

That last row matters most. The property that makes chlorella good at scavenging metals from water means the water it grew in determines what ends up in the powder, so ask for lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury results on the lot you are buying. On Japanese sourcing, the FDA deactivated its Fukushima-related import alert in September 2021 after 1,749 samples turned up three with detectable cesium, all far below Japan’s limit. The defensible phrasing is “we test every lot,” never “radiation-free.”
Common questions
Is broken cell wall chlorella worth paying more for?
On the available human data, yes. In the 2024 crossover trial, whole-cell chlorella produced no net rise in plasma amino acids over five hours while split-cell chlorella produced a substantial one. The sample was 10 people, so treat it as direction rather than a settled number. There is no argument for paying anything for intact cells.
Does chlorella detox heavy metals?
No human trial has shown it. The evidence usually cited is water-treatment biosorption, one mouse study, and two small dioxin studies in pregnant women better explained by fiber acting in the gut. Anyone worried about a real exposure needs a physician, not a supplement.
Can chlorella cover my B12 on a vegan diet?
Not reliably. Chlorella’s B12 is the active form, unlike spirulina’s, but across 19 tested products the content varied more than 4,000-fold, because it comes from bacteria in the growing water rather than the alga. Without an assay on the lot, there is no way to know what a serving delivers.
How is chlorella different from spirulina?
Different organisms with different problems. Spirulina has no cell-wall issue but its B12 is the inactive pseudovitamin form. Chlorella has real B12 but a wall that must be broken first. Our write-up on spirulina covers that side.
How long before anything shows up?

Chlorella is a legitimate whole-food source of plant protein, fiber, chlorophyll and lutein, and one of the few green ingredients where a processing detail changes what you get.
