
The information you need is on the back of the tub, and almost none of it is on the front. A greens powder is worth your money if it discloses every ingredient in milligrams, gives you enough grams of plant material to be worth swallowing, and can show you third-party test results for the batch you are holding.
Everything else — the ingredient count, the leaf photography, the word “premium” — is decoration. What follows is the checking method, in the order a label gives it up. It applies to every product in the category, ours included.
Start on the back of the tub
US labeling rules are more permissive than most shoppers assume. A manufacturer may group ingredients into a “proprietary blend” and disclose only the total weight of the blend, never the amount of anything inside it (21 CFR 101.36(c)). A label that lists each ingredient in milligrams is doing something the law does not require. That is the most informative thing a brand can tell you, and it costs them the ability to hide.
The blend arithmetic
One rule survives inside a proprietary blend: ingredients must appear in descending order of predominance by weight, which gives you a lever. A “Super Greens Blend, 2,000 mg” spread across 25 ingredients averages 80 mg each, and descending order means the ones at the end of the list are smaller than that. Whatever 80 mg of anything is, it is not a dose.
Then count the scoop. If the panel says 8 g and the disclosed blends add up to 3 g, about 5 g is something the label has not accounted for. A long ingredient list is a marketing asset, not a dose: 75 ingredients in a 10 g scoop is arithmetically incompatible with a meaningful amount of most of them.
Sugar, flavor and filler
Because everything is listed heaviest first, position tells you what you are mostly buying. Maltodextrin, rice flour, tapioca syrup, cane sugar or “natural flavors” sitting above the greens outweigh them. Reviewing 23 greens products, ConsumerLab found some containing greater amounts of tapioca syrup and sugar than fruits or vegetables (ConsumerLab greens review). Added Sugars must also be declared on the Supplement Facts panel, so that number is there to read.
What belongs near the top
The ingredients worth paying for are the ones the formula is named after, in amounts large enough to print. That means concentrated greens — barley grass, wheat grass and alfalfa — and algae such as spirulina and chlorella, each with its own milligram figure beside it. Fruit extracts, fiber sources and probiotic strains are legitimate additions, and also the ones most often present in trace amounts. What the seals actually verify
Certification marks are useful and routinely over-read. Each verifies a specific, bounded thing, and none certifies that a product contains no heavy metals — a claim not available to anyone.
The most misread mark is USDA Organic. It requires three years of documented clean-soil practice but no finished-product testing for lead, cadmium or arsenic, and lead persists in soil far longer than three years. ConsumerLab notes that organic cocoa has tended to be more contaminated with cadmium than non-organic cocoa (ConsumerLab on the organic seal). Organic is a farming standard, not a purity test, and treating it as one gets the argument backwards.

Those scopes come from the programs themselves (NSF). ConsumerLab is a different animal: independent post-market testing that brands do not pay for, which is why its findings sometimes embarrass certified products. When a brand says “third-party tested,” the follow-up is which lab, testing for what, and whether you can see the batch certificate.
Heavy metals, in proportion
The concern is real and the mechanism is boring. Greens powders are concentrated dried plant material, and plants take up what is in their soil; concentrating the plant concentrates the metals. That is a property of the category, not a scandal about one brand.
Two testing programs are worth knowing. ConsumerLab’s review of 23 greens products found lead to be the main issue and concluded that nine of them should not be used on a regular basis by children and pregnant women, while finding no microbial or pesticide contamination. In the adjacent protein category, the Clean Label Project tested 165 products across 70 brands in January 2025 and reported that plant-based powders carried roughly five times the cadmium of whey, and chocolate versions about 110 times the cadmium of vanilla (Clean Label Project). If a greens formula contains cacao, hold on to that last finding.
Then calibrate the phrase that does the most work in this category, “exceeds Prop 65.” California’s Proposition 65 sets a Maximum Allowable Dose Level for lead of 0.5 µg per day, and exceeding it triggers a warning label, not a ban (OEHHA). The FDA’s interim reference levels are 2.2 µg per day for children and 8.8 µg per day for females of childbearing age (FDA on lead in food). Prop 65 is roughly 25 times stricter than the FDA’s adult interim level — strict enough that a half-cup of cooked spinach would warrant a warning. “Exceeds Prop 65” means “would legally require a California warning label.” It does not mean “will harm you.” The FDA also states that no safe level of lead exposure has been identified, which is why the reasonable response is lower exposure over time rather than panic or dismissal.
Spirulina, chlorella and the cyanotoxin question
Spirulina is a cyanobacterium, and open-pond cultivation lets toxin-producing relatives grow alongside it. A 2021 analysis of 31 commercial spirulina products on the Greek market detected microcystins in all 31 samples, at 35.7–583.5 ng/g dry weight. Measured against WHO-derived tolerable daily intakes, no sample exceeded the adult TDI of 2.4 µg per day; six exceeded the children’s TDI and 23 the infant TDI (Journal of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, 2021).
The honest synthesis is narrower than either camp would like. ConsumerLab’s position is that microcystin appears common in Aphanizomenon flos-aquae supplements but tends not to occur in significant amounts in spirulina, and it treats the BMAA question as theoretical (ConsumerLab on spirulina safety). Trace detection is common, adult exposure in published surveys sits below the adult tolerable intake, and the defensible caution is age-specific. At purchase, what matters is controlled cultivation, batch microcystin testing by an ISO-accredited lab, confirmed species identity, and a published certificate of analysis.
What this testing does not settle
Most of the numbers circulating in this category are weaker than their headlines. The Clean Label Project report was not peer-reviewed and disclosed neither its full methodology nor its funding, and trade bodies argued that detecting a metal is not the same as demonstrating a health risk (NutraIngredients). It also tested protein powders, so it transfers to greens by inference, not evidence.
Then there is who did the testing. Some of the most quotable heavy-metal figures come from testing commissioned and written up by companies selling competing products. That does not make the numbers wrong, but they have not survived independent review and should not be read as neutral. A seal has a limit of the same kind: it verifies a program and the batches inside it, not the tub in front of you. Nobody, ourselves included, can honestly sell you certainty here.
What a meaningful dose looks like in grams
ConsumerLab’s benchmark is blunt: most of these supplements provide no more than 2 to 10 grams of powdered fruits and vegetables per daily serving, and many do not list the amounts at all. That range sets a ceiling on what any of them can do.
The Dietary Guidelines call for 1.5–2 cup-equivalents of fruit and 2–3 of vegetables daily, and in 2019 only 12.3% of US adults met the fruit recommendation and 10.0% the vegetable one (CDC MMWR). A 5–10 g scoop of disclosed greens supplements that gap; it does not close it. ConsumerLab’s own conclusion is that these powders are not effective substitutes for whole foods, and a brand claiming otherwise cannot support it.
Price per serving is the wrong unit
Across a tested roundup of 14 products, price per serving ran from $0.75 to $3.30, mostly between $1.15 and $2.25 (Garage Gym Reviews). Those figures mean little alone, because a serving is whatever the brand decides to call one. A $0.75 serving from a 3 g scoop that is half maltodextrin is not cheaper than a $2.00 serving of 8 g of disclosed greens. It is a smaller purchase at a higher unit price.
Divide the tub price by the total grams of disclosed active ingredients it contains. That one number makes products comparable, and it is usually unflattering to the cheapest option on the shelf. Then allow for what no spreadsheet catches: an unfinished tub delivers nothing. Try single-serve sachets before a 90-day container, check how it dissolves, and notice that heavy sweetening is often what makes a high-filler formula palatable.
Common questions
Can a greens powder replace my vegetables?
No, and the testing organizations say so directly. ConsumerLab concludes these powders are not effective substitutes for whole foods, largely because a 2–10 g scoop cannot stand in for several cup-equivalents of produce. They suit a diet already short on produce, which describes most people.
Do greens powders detox the body or remove heavy metals?
No. No greens powder has been shown to remove metals from the body, and phrases like “detoxifies,” “cleanses” or “alkalizes your blood” describe marketing categories rather than physiological ones. The productive version of that worry runs the other way: what is coming in with the powder, and whether the brand will show you the test results.
Is it safe to take spirulina every day?
In published surveys, adult exposure to microcystins from commercial spirulina sat below the WHO-derived adult tolerable daily intake, even where traces were found in every sample tested. The documented caution is age-specific: several samples exceeded the intakes calculated for infants and young children. For daily use, look for a maker that publishes batch microcystin testing from an accredited lab.
Putting it together
Turn the tub around, add up the disclosed milligrams, divide the price by the grams of real greens, and ask for the batch certificate. Four checks, five minutes, and they work on any label in the category.
