5 Hour Energy linked with 13 deaths, Monster linked with 5 deaths

As reported by the New York Times, a recent spate of deaths associated with 5 Hour Energy and Monster has sparked an investigation by the FDA into the dangers of caffeinated Energy Drinks.

According to FDA spokeswoman Shelley Burgess, 5 Hour Energy has been been mentioned in 90 product incident reports since 2009, including more than 30 that involved serious or life-threatening events like heart attacks, convulsions and, in one case, spontaneous abortion.

Both Red Bull and Rockstar have also been implicated, with 13 incident reports for Rockstar and 21 for Red Bull. And according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, more than 13,000 emergency room visits in 2009 were associated with Energy Drinks alone.

Amount of Caffeine varies per serving , often contains more than label claim

A recent Consumer Reports analysis of 27 Energy Drinks found the caffeine content ranging from 5mg (5 Hour Energy Decaf) to 242mg (5 Hour Energy Extra Strength). Since a regular 8oz cup of coffee contains less than 100mg, some Energy Drinks contain up to 2.4 times the amount of caffeine, in only 2oz.

While 11 of the 27 Energy Drinks tested do not specify the amount of caffeine on the label for proprietary reasons, Consumer Reports found that 5 of the 16 products that do contained 20% more caffeine than the label claim.

Scientific authorities should carefully study the interaction of Caffeine and Taurine, a primary culprit

The individual, performance-enhancing benefits of Caffeine (increased alertness, concentration, endurance) and Taurine (cardiovascular function, skeletal muscle contraction) have been scientifically proven.

However, a study comparing the effects of Energy Drinks (Caffeine + Taurine) vs. Caffeine supplementation, found that Energy Drinks significantly increased both blood pressure and cardiac force of contraction more than Caffeine alone.
