The results of a large study of nearly half a million older adults followed for 12 years revealed a clear trend: as coffee drinking increases, the risk of death decreases
In the study published February 19, 2013, Epidemiology of Caffeine Consumption and Association of Coffee Drinking with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality, author Neal Freedman, Ph. D., MPH of the National Cancer Insititute, discussed these findings and the potential links between coffee drinking, caffeine consumption and various specific causes of disease in an interview in the Journal of Caffeine Research.
These results further reinforce a dose dependant meta-analysis of coffee consumption and the heart health, published by the American Heart Association, in May 2012. This study found that moderate coffee consumption is associated with heart health, with the largest association observed for consumption of 4 cups per day. Suprisingly, coffee didn’t stop being beneficial until subjects had increased their daily consumption to beyond ten cups.
