A new study suggests that people who eat a minimum of 7 servings a day significantly increase life span

The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, tracked the fruit and vegetable consumption of 65,000 adults in the UK between 2001 and 2008.

While the participants ate an average of 3.8 servings of fruit and vegetables per day, with 1 serving equivalent to 80 grams or 3 ounces, those who ate at least 7 servings were 42% were more likely to live longer, healthier lives.

Interestingly, older non-smoking women tended to eat more than other demographic groups, which may explain the longer life expectancy this group enjoys when compared to men.

Produce consumption was also linked to a more favorable body mass index, as those who ate more fruit and vegetables tended to have a lower BMI.

Also, vegetables provided a greater health benefit than fruit. Those who ate more than three or four servings of fruit daily did not realize the same benefits as the vegetable group.
